When we first began wearing masks at the beginning of the pandemic, there were incidents of people being harassed for not wearing masks. Now, people are being shamed for another reason. Mask-shaming is not acceptable and could accelerate the spread of CV-19. Choosing to wear a mask is not a political party statement. For older adults, CV-19 has been identified as an “almost perfect killing machine.” When in public, older adults should wear masks.
Mask-wearing guidance for older adults from Johns Hopkins
Medicine: “People
with higher risk factors for COVID-19: This would include people over age 65, and those living with
heart disease, diabetes, chronic lung disease, immunity problems, or cancer.”

Dr. Georgiana Peacock, MD, is Director,
Division of Human Development and Disability at the Center for Disease Control
[CDC]. She cautions older adults to take
extra precautions during the pandemic, as they are at higher risk for serious
complications from CV-19. Her two-minute video is well worth watching. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/people-at-higher-risk.html
Further, the CDC updated their mask
guidelines four days ago. The CDC recommends mask-wearing and social distancing
in public settings for EVERYONE to
slow the spread of the virus. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/cloth-face-cover.html
