On July 1, Hugh Downs
died at the age of ninety-nine. Most Americans remember Downs' long and distinguished career in
broadcasting and media journalism. He also had a second career that few people know about.
I am
disappointed that the media did not illuminate his achievements in gerontology. Not
only did Downs earn a certificate in gerontology from Hunter College, but also
in geriatric medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical School. I had the pleasure of
attending his keynote address at an aging scientific meeting and I was spellbound.
Downs was not
only an advocate for older adults, but championed nursing home reform. I have
included a short article about him below. He was an incredible man!
