RIP Hugh Downs

On July 1, Hugh Downs died at the age of ninety-nine. Most Americans remember Downs' long and distinguished career in broadcasting and media journalism. He also had a second career that few people know about.

I am disappointed that the media did not illuminate his achievements in gerontology. Not only did Downs earn a certificate in gerontology from Hunter College, but also in geriatric medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical School.  I had the pleasure of attending his keynote address at an aging scientific meeting and I was spellbound.

Downs was not only an advocate for older adults, but championed nursing home reform. I have included a short article about him below.  He was an incredible man!
