Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration [AMD], a progressive eye disease caused by deterioration of the retina, is the leading cause of blindness among older adults. Regular ophthalmology eye exams are ESSENTIAL, as there are no symptoms in the early stages.

Older adults should have their eye exams performed by a board-certified ophthalmologist, who will screen for macular degeneration and other diseases. Older adults need a comprehensive exam and that includes eye dilation to determine if it is present and if so, at what stage. Older adults who want to remain independent and enjoy optimum quality of life should have annual eye exams.
