According to a new publication by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (2020), healthy living is important for optimum aging. I AGREE! Their ten steps for successful aging include:
· Eat well including low-fat foods, fiber, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Limit red meat, fried and processed foods, and salt.
· Remain active. Walking and weight training are my recommendations for maintaining mobility and functionality.
· Continue learning. Studies have shown that people with “curious minds” maintain higher cognitive functioning.
· Sleep! Get at least 7-9 hours per night. Sleep deprivation may be misinterpreted as dementia and sleep deprivation leads to falls. Remember, dozing on the recliner is napping and anything more than 20 minutes will interrupt getting a good night’s sleep.
· Take medications properly and on time. Mixing over-the-counter and prescription medications can be dangerous. Ask first.
· Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.
· Remain socially engaged. The act of talking, listening and conversing result in “brain firing” that promotes brain health, as neurons fire in the auditory cortex of the brain. While solitary word games and puzzles are entertaining, they are no substitution for engaging in conversation.
· Log your blood pressure. Take cuff blood pressure readings daily and keep a log.
· Maintain checkups. Take your blood pressure log, a list of all current medications [both over-the-counter and prescriptions], and vitamins.
· Get a memory screening! It’s not scary at all. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America schedules them for FREE. Call 866.232.8484.
· Added by Dr. White: Maintain a healthy weight. Download a BMI chart and stay within normal limits. Being overweight or obese leads to a LONG LIST of devastating chronic conditions that, unfortunately, may lead to loss of independence and dementia.
