Hi Readers, what is retirement? To some it is selling the family home to buy the RV for fun and travel with a Spending their Inheritance! sticker on the bumper. It can be a springboard toward a new career. For some, it is sickness and boredom. Retirement is not easily defined! Given what is known, it can be defined as living without a paycheck. But that is still too vague!
Researchers Frank T. Denton and Byron G. Spencer, authors of What is Retirement? A Review and Assessment of Alternative Concepts and Measures (2008), examine this fuzzy topic with the purpose of "reviewing and assessing the many concepts and measures of retirement" (p. 2) that include the complexities and negativity of leaving the paid workforce.
Grant funding from the Social Sciences and Humanaties Research Council of Canada and collaboration from the SEDAP [Social and Economic Dimensions of an Aging Population] Research Program support this joint investigation by Denton and Spencer.
